Education is a liberating force. It is especially essential for those who were not born normal like other humans. Persons with special needs or disabilities could be made to stand on their own feet with right education and training. At IICD, we have established a school and an institute for the education and training of children with disabilities, including the Hearing Impaired (deaf) and visually impaired (blind). A few years ago, we also added facilities for mentally challenged children.
The academic activities run on a spacious 450 square yards campus in the Chaderghat area of Hyderabad, one of the most densely populated cities in India. We have special institutions—School for Hearing Impaired and Institute for visually Impaired that offer academic services for free. Moreover, we provide students with uniforms, bags, books, notebooks, and shoes for free at the beginning of every academic year. These institutions run as per the norms of the Government of Telangana and have appropriate regulatory approvals.
High School for Hearing Impaired
Started soon after the establishment of IICD, School for Hearing Impaired is a caring hub for deaf learners. Realizing the importance of education, especially in empowering persons with Differently abled, the leaders behind IICD set up the school. The school management and teaching staff take utmost care in providing quality education to hearing-impaired students. They use special sign language, unique educational methods, and tailor-made classroom strategies to deliver lessons to our deaf students. The high school for the hearing and speech impaired has English as its medium of instruction.
Initially, the school started with around twenty students. Now it has more than 100 students. Besides regular education, we offer computer education, skills training, and moral education to hearing-impaired students. Our students have consistently performed better batch after batch. Some of the students got government jobs while others worked in the private sector. The school is recognized by the Government of Telangana, and it has a government-issued PWD Certificate.
Institute for Visually Impaired
Establishment of Institute for Blind was another milestone in the journey of IICD towards achieving its social goal of imparting education to the blind children. In its early days, the institute ran from the Mehdipatnam campus. However, in 2018, the need to relocate the institute to the Chaderghat campus was favorably considered by the management.
After the construction of the first floor in the existing building of IICD at Chaderghat, the institute for the visually impaired was shifted and the education of blind students continued. A variety of computer courses are offered to blind students to train them in different computer skills. These blind students receive special education, computer training and other morals. We have witnessed increasing enrolment in our institute over the last few years. With the dedicated team of instructors at IICD, we hope to continue catering to the needs of blind students in the best possible way.
Special Education for Intellectual Disability
In line with the services offered to hearing impaired and visually impaired children, IICD realized the need to offer various services mentally challenged children. It began offering special education to mentally challenged children from 2017 onwards.
Our trained teachers are qualified to coach students with special needs, including mentally challenged. We train them in basic special education and assess their progress every quarter. Our mentally challenged students along with the deaf students performed in numerous public programs. In future, IICD plans to start a physiotherapy section as part of treatment for the mentally challenged students in MR Section.
